If you’re planning a trip to Gatlinburg in the winter, you probably already have a cozy cabin booked, a hot tub high on your wish list, and visions of festive lights glowing throughout town. But if you want a trip people actually talk about long after it’s over, there’s one experience worth adding to your plans: a UTV adventure around the Smokies.
Here’s what you can do on a UTV in the winter, plus a simple one day plan to help you get the most out of your trip.
Quick answers before you plan anything
People usually ask the same few things first, so here are the basics.
- UTV vs SXS
You’ll see both terms. They’re basically the same thing. In this post, we’ll just say UTV. - Do I need a license to drive?
Yes. If you can drive a normal vehicle, you can drive a street legal UTV. - Kids and car seats
Families ride with us all the time. If your child normally uses a car seat or booster in your own car, plan to bring it and use it in the UTV too. - Where can I drive a street legal UTV?
Our street legal UTVs are registered for paved public roads where they’re allowed. That includes driving around Gatlinburg and on many scenic roads. Inside the national park, you still stay on open paved roads and follow any posted closures. No off road driving in the park.

Why a UTV fits winter in Gatlinburg so well
One of the biggest perks of winter in Gatlinburg is visibility. With the leaves off the trees, the Smokies open up in a way you don’t see in summer. Ridges feel higher. Valleys look deeper. The whole mountain range looks sharper and more dramatic.
A UTV gives you instant access to those views because you’re not stuck in traffic or fighting for parking at the popular overlooks. You can pull over anywhere it’s safe, take your time with photos, or just stop and breathe in the cold mountain air.
Popular spots that work great in a UTV
One of the questions we hear most often is: “Where can I actually take a UTV?” and of course, “How much time do I need to really enjoy the Smoky Mountains?”
You can take a UTV to a lot of places around here. It depends on how much time you’ve got and what kind of day you want. Most of the time, a half day is plenty to hit several of the classic spots below.
And if you ride with us, our routes are set up to take you to the major highlights and add in those quieter roads and viewpoints most visitors never end up seeing.
- Newfound Gap Road – long, steady climb with big views and multiple pull-offs.
- Gatlinburg Bypass – quick drive with a strong overlook above town.
- Little River Road – follows the river, with plenty of spots to stop and walk down to the water.
- Clingmans Dome Road (when open) – higher elevation and colder, with frosty views.
- Foothills Parkway – long-range mountain views and smooth driving.
- The drive toward Cherokee – quieter feel, more chances to see wildlife.
…all feel completely different with the open visibility and crisp winter skies.
Modern UTVs are built for cold weather
Winter riding in the Gatlinburg area doesn’t mean you’re going to freeze. We have several machines in our fleet that are fully enclosed with heat.
They are designed for year-round adventures, making them well suited for the cooler holiday season. These vehicles are street-legal, allowing you to cruise the Parkway and scenic mountain roads, and many feature roofs, windshields, or partially enclosed cabs. Some even include heaters or enhanced wind protection to help keep everyone warm while you’re on the move.
You still feel connected to the outdoors and the surrounding scenery, but without being blasted by icy mountain air. Add a warm jacket, a hat, gloves, and maybe a blanket for the kids, and you’ll stay comfortable for hours of riding.
If you’re already looking for a place to stay in Gatlinburg this winter, consider a cabin or condo with easy parking and then pair it with an enclosed UTV rental for a complete “cozy plus adventure” combo.

Choosing Your UTV Adventure
You’ve basically got two options for winter in Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains:
rent a street legal UTV and explore on your own, or hop on a guided off road tour if you want something short and muddy.
Street legal rental
Winter is honestly one of the best times to rent a UTV. Once the busy season is over, Gatlinburg gets much quieter, and that makes driving around town easier and more relaxed.
You can cruise the Parkway and hit many of the Smokies’ top scenic spots without dealing with traffic, which is a huge win if you’re visiting in the colder months.
Besides the spots we mentioned earlier, there are plenty of scenic routes, pull-offs, and mountain roads to enjoy, and during winter most places are uncrowded. Snow is usually light enough that roads stay clear, so you can still drive comfortably and safely.

If you rent with Off-Road Gatlinburg, you can choose half-day or full-day, depending on how much you want to pack in. Several of our UTVs are fully enclosed and heated, so you can stay comfortable even when it’s cold.
And.. we also include a few extras for scenic stops, like chairs and a cooler, so your group can actually pause and enjoy the views instead of of doing everything standing by the road.
Do you provide routes and directions? Yes. Tell us how long you’re renting and what you want to see, and we’ll point you to the best routes for that day.
Off-Road Tour
If you’re just passing through Gatlinburg or looking for a short, action-packed adventure, you can also take a guided off-road UTV tour in our private park. This leaves plenty of time to enjoy the rest of town or whatever else you’ve got planned for that day.

The tour lasts about 90 minutes and takes you through dirt trails, creek crossings, and rugged terrain. This is a full-on off-road experience, so expect mud, splashes, and a bit of adrenaline, and yes, you’ll likely get wet along the trail. Don’t worry, winter gear handles it just fine.
This one is especially fun for families because everyone can have a blast and honestly, the muddy moments are part of the fun. If you don’t mind getting a little dirty, you should definitely add this to your plan.

Along the way, we stop at the Million Dollar View, the highest point of our park, which offers incredible panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains.
The park is about 30 minutes from Gatlinburg, so it’s a great option if you want to get out of the crowds for a bit and do something you’ll actually remember.
A sample winter UTV day in Gatlinburg
If you decide to rent a SXS, here is a simple way to build a day into your Gatlinburg in the winter itinerary:
Morning
- Eat breakfast at your cabin or in town.
- Pick up your street-legal UTV (2, 4, or 6 seater, depending on your group).
- Head toward the national park for scenic drives and easy pull-offs: overlooks, creeks, and short walks.
Midday
- Stop in Gatlinburg or along the Spur for lunch.
- Grab coffee or hot chocolate and warm up for a bit.
- If the weather is clear, go for a higher-elevation drive in the afternoon for winter views of the Smokies.
Evening
- Return to your cabin or hotel to change into warmer layers.
- Take the UTV out again after dark to cruise the Parkway and enjoy the Winterfest and Winter Magic light displays.
- Finish the night back at your place with the fire going and phones full of photos.
This plan works well even on shorter winter days, and it still leaves time for other classic winter in Gatlinburg activities like ice skating, snow tubing at Ober Mountain, or visiting Anakeesta.
